Type 2 diabetes is a disease that is rather sneaky. By the time people get symptoms, there is high chance that some permanent damage has already been done.
Because of this it is important to be aware of your risk, because if you know you are high risk, you can get screened for diabetes and get treatment before damage occurs.
Or, even better, if you find out that you are at high risk of diabetes, before diabetes occurs, there are many things you can do to prevent or delay the disease and live a long and healthy life.
FINDRISC is an assessment tool developed by the Finnish Diabetes Association, a leader in diabetes research. It is based on real 10 year follow-up data, so it gives a good estimate of your chances to develop diabetes in the next 10 years. It validated by many researchers and widely used in many countries, and has more questions than many other questionnaires. This means that it can give a better estimate than most. It has been studied extensively, and it has been shown, that risk assessment with FINDRISC, and education and lifestyle changes based upon the assessment can significantly decrease Type 2 diabetes.
So if you have done the FINDRISC, and fall into the high or the very high risk category, you could consider making a lifestyle change to decrease that risk. You could have a one to one session with our dietitian, or you could join a group education, or you could do it any other way. The important thing is to know your risk and to decrease it. Because it is possible.
